Just remember that it will take TTL amount of time before your data expires and disk space can be reclaimed.
which is the whole point of TTL after all.
@jean_carlo: what about the data present in the data when setting a default ttl non zero? I guess data will not change by itself right ?

TTL will be applied only to new/updated records after you make the change
