Last week in scylladb.git master (issue #339; 2026-11-01)

This short report brings to light some interesting commits to scylladb.git master from the last week. Commits in the 34306e48afe..4944acbe068 range are covered.

There were 274 non-merge commits from 36 authors in that period. Some notable commits:

The version number was updated to 2027.1.0-dev, marking the start of the 2027.1 development cycle and beginning 2026.4 stabilization.

Storage for tokens in memtable and cache was reduced, improving memory utilization.

Tests are now hardened against a time-zone change while running the test due to daylight saving time changes.

The code paths that apply a mutation to a memtable were optimized.

There is now profile-guided optimization (PGO) training for Alternator BatchWriteItem workloads.

Deserialization of blobs and text fields was optimized by pre-allocating memory.

A crash was fixed when a collection element was set as a clustering column with descending sort order.

A bug involving expired range tombstones and reversed reads, which could cause data resurrection, was fixed.

Listing snapshots via the API now avoids large contiguous allocations in order to prevent stalls.

The snake_case names of native functions, introduced by Cassandra 5, are now recognized.

The JSON representation of user-defined type values was improved.

User-defined functions using the Lua language can now return tuples with NULL components.

Repair will now discard timed-out hints.

Service levels are now marked usable only after they were propagated to every shard.

Hint encryption metadata are now moved when hint segments are moved to another shard.

A protocol extension now reports failed read and failed write replicas separately.

Lua scripts in the scylla sstable command now use UTC time.

Exception safety during memtable apply was improved.

The CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION statement is now more careful to preserve the function signature if operating in replace mode.

Tablets-routing-v2 is a new protocol for distributing tablet placement information to drivers. It is now more accurate for statements with non-bind-marker partition keys, and for lightweight transactions.

Schema propagation across shards is now more careful about race conditions.

Raft and memtables now share the same commitlog entry for strongly-consistent tables.

Time Window Compaction Strategy now ignores min_threshold for old windows to reduce space amplification.

Automatic scrub will periodically validate sstables that were not verified by other means.

The DESCRIBE FUNCTION statement is now more accurate with respect to the function body.

Hints are now drained before a decommissioned node is banned.

Automatic vnode to tablet migration now supports tables with counters.

A potential deadlock in Raft was fixed.

The sstable parser is now more defensive against corruption.

Stopping Raft is now faster.

Strongly consistent tables now evaluate impure functions for the partition key only once.

The Python driver used for the test suite was updated to 3.29.12.

Aggregate functions can now use bind variables.

Some scylla.yaml options can now be managed via the ALTER CLUSTER family.

Sanitiation mode, a faster alternative to debug mode, was made ready for regular use.

Waiting for hint synchronization no longer blocks topology changes.

User defined aggregates with paradoxical deinitions are now rejected.

Data sampling for dictionary compression now uses less concurrent traffic in order to avoid bandwidth limits.

Timeouts for Raft group 0 were improved, avoiding potentially infinite waits.

Metadata for tablet restore was optimized.

The release build now defined NDEBUG.
